Bénédictine

Historical Haikus with I. Madhar

I. Madhar
December 15, 2024

1.

Mills loom in the mist,

Bene ‘n’ ’ot warms the cold hands,

Frost rests on the hills.

2.

Bene ‘n’ ’ot warms hands,

Mills hum in Burnley’s cold mist,

Frost on hills remains.

3.

Bene ‘n’ ’ot warms hands,

Burnley’s cold nights share a drink,

Tradition lives on.

Background notes:
Great War soldiers of the East Lancashire Regiment having acquired a taste for Bénédictine while stationed in France. People in Burnley, England, still drink Bénédictine with hot water known as ‘Bene ‘n’ ‘ot, and the Burnley Miners’ Club is reputedly the largest single customer.
