Burnley Through the Eyes of an International Student

Ajaz speaks to Theo

Recently, as I wandered along Saint James Street, I had the opportunity to speak with Theo, an international student from Botswana,  who shared his experiences and thoughts of life in Burnley. I spotted him from afar, donning a Burnley FC beanie, and couldn’t resist approaching him to hear his story.

Theo has only been in Burnley for a few months but says he 'loves it' and has found it to be 'quite interesting' and surprisingly welcoming. 'A lot of people told me that Burnley isn’t safe,' he admitted, 'but I haven’t felt that personally. I’ve been able to take walks, visit the local parks, and explore the area without any issues.'

Theo is here to study medicine at UCLan's Burnley Campus, a course that will see him stay in the local area for another three years. His studies focus not only on treating conditions and prescribing medications but also on preventive care—helping patients avoid unnecessary treatments. 'It’s about managing people’s health so they don't even need the medicine in the first place' he explained.

When asked about his plans for the festive holidays, Theo shared his intention to take up part-time work. 'I’m thinking of returning to Nando’s,' he said with his shining smile. 'I’ve worked there before and found the people very nice. I might also look for opportunities at the hospital since I am studying medicine.'

Theo's viewpoint as an international student sheds light on Burnley’s appeal and is a testament to the economic availability and growth we have here in Burnley. The town’s accessibility, student facilities, and strong sense of community are just a few of the things Theo had picked up on. Even in our short interaction, Theo mentioned just how easy it was to pick up a conversation with someone in Burnley.

Theo's journey to becoming a student and resident of Burnley highlights the town’s evolving identity as a place - a place which a diverse group of people call home. His optimistic outlook serves as a reminder of the warmth and opportunities Burnley can offer to those who live here.
