Winter Walk

Julie Woodrup laces up her boots

Julie Woodrup
December 15, 2024

Eyelashes netting flakes,

Blinking, blinding, melting motes.

White on black.

Black on red.

Dripping, rougeing, rosy,

glowing, chilled cheeks.

Slopes strenuously stridden.

Inclines evident everywhere.

White on green.

Green on brown.

Paths and surfaces

surprisingly sparse.

Steam engine effort

creating plumes of breath.

Clear to white.

White to clear.

Deceptive in their disguise as warmth

All to reach the crest.

Energy leeching from every limb,

The cold nose tip, the aching teeth.

Blue upon purple.

Purple upon white.

The snow enhancing the sight.

Willpower alone forcing one step in front of the other.

The Singing Ringing Tree,

the frontispiece to beauty.

Paint on canvas.

Canvas of life.

Breathless, speechless, overawed.

Nature at its best.
